Early Orthodontic Prevention
While children typically do not being seeing an orthodontist until age 7, many children begin showing signs of orthodontic concerns earlier. Orthodontic conditions such as crowded teeth, abnormal spacing between teeth, improper jaw growth, and bad bites can be caused by many factors, including genetics, dental trauma, early or late loss of baby teeth, or prolonged thumb-sucking habits.
On average, children lose all their temporary teeth by age 13, and their jawbones will have hardened and ceased to grow by the end of their teen years. Because of this, adult orthodontic procedures often take more time and are more likely to involve tooth extractions and oral surgery. Early orthodontic treatment can prevent the necessity of orthodontics during adulthood, reducing the risk of tooth extraction and oral surgery. Additionally, early treatment greatly reduces the cost of orthodontics in the long run by preventing future problems that could require more extensive treatment.
